MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Why Does Colors Matter?
Our lives are surrounded by colors. Color is an important part of the human perception and influences the mind more than we think. Specifically, it has psychological and physiological effects.
Color is a powerful tool for communication. People use colors to express themselves and their emotions, also to simply help themselves feel confident with their bodies and appearance.
Color can influence consumers’ impressions of a brand and purchase decisions, and thus it is integral to marketing and branding. The right colors communicate meaning and please the eye, whereas the wrong colors can be unpleasant and even unsettling.
Colors can also influence customers’ emotions – either positively or negatively. Many objects have been designed to convey a message through color. By learning the world of “color”, we can make use of it in our advantage.
Without further ado, in this month member spotlight we’d like to introduce you Ms. Michiko Taoka, a color specialist and representative of Spiral Color. Winner of the Group Excellence Award from Japan Color Coordinator Association 4 years in a row, she will tell us more about herself and the importance of colors in day-to-day life.
Let’s start with the basics. Who is Spiral Color and what is your role in the company?
My name is Michiko Taoka, a color designer and representative of Spiral Color.
Spiral Color is a school with official certification from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan that offers personal color diagnostic services, survey and design for products and corporates.
Can you tell us a little about the history of Spiral Color? When was it founded, what sparked it, etc.?
I was working for DIC Color Design Inc., one of the biggest groups of companies in Japan, as a Network Group Manager. With my 28 years of experience in color design and fashion industry, I wanted to use my knowledge and passion in fashion helping people with their appearance and explain them more how color affect the appearance.
I established Spiral Color in 2008 and started providing services in Thailand since 2011.
I have also published 3 books in Japanese, including “COLOR OF LIFE, Let’s Incorporate Colors into Your Life” and “Attract with Colors!” and 1 in Thai language named “Power of Color”.
Who would benefit most from Spiral Color services? Are you targeting only women or also men?
Everyone can benefit from our service, both men and woman of all ages. We are also providing color lectures, color surveys and design for products and companies.
Let me explain you more about color and why personal color analysis is important. The first impression is determined in 5 seconds and the colors you select to wear are important in creating an attractive appearance. Flattering colors can brighten the skin and emphasize the color of the hair and eyes. Unflattering colors can make the skin look drained, sallow, or unhealthy. We provide people with their personal color that results from their original skin tone, eyes and hair color analysis. We will then select 10 best colors out of 160 and give them a personalized and detailed styling advice sheet on how to use these colors effectively.
What has been your favorite project and why?
Some of my most favorite projects were doing color surveys and color design for Toyota’s car interior in various parts of Asia, as well as being in charge of color design for packages and fabric for PASAYA, a major fabric manufacturer in Thailand, which was very successful in the market.
How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected you and your business – positively or negatively?
It was very frustrating at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. We had to close our salon in February 2021, but overcame the difficulties by focusing on online courses. We had small group lessons and lectures online for companies around the world.
Let’s talk a little about you. What do you enjoy when you are not working?
I enjoy travelling and shopping. I also do Muay Thai and Trampoline exercises 4 days a week. And my most favorite hobby is sewing Japanese Kimonos.
What made you choose Antares as home base for your company?
Antares has a very stylish interior and design which perfectly represents Spiral Color. The location is great and the services and staff are amazing.
